New Generating Unit

In July 2005, Cleco Power announced the planned construction of a new $1 billion, 600-megawatt solid-fuel generating unit using Circulating Fluidized-Bed Technology to diversify its fuel mix and lower electricity costs for its customers. It will be the third of two existing units at the company's Rodemacher Power Station site in Lena near Boyce, La.

Rodemacher is located on a 6,000-acre site. Unit 1, 100 percent owned by Cleco, is fueled by natural gas and low-sulfur fuel oil and can produce 440 megawatts of electricity. Unit 2, jointly owned by Cleco Power, Louisiana Energy and Power Authority and Lafayette Utilities System, is fueled predominantly by coal from Wyoming and can produce 523 megawatts. Together, the two units produce a total of 963 megawatts. The third generating unit will be capable of producing 600 megawatts of electricity (two 300-megawatt boilers). The gross output will be 660 megawatts. Construction began in May 2006 and is expected to be complete in late 2009.
