E-Cool School
Through the E-Cool School program, Cleco works to enhance the natural ecosystem of schoolyards and helps provide outdoor learning. The first E-Cool School project began in February 2000 at Northwood High School in Boyce near Rodemacher Power Station. Two years later, Cleco received the 2002 Public Utility Education Award from the Louisiana Urban Forestry Council for its E-Cool School program.
Cleco partners with three schools in its service territory to develop and maintain schoolyard habitats. Teachers, students, staff and Cleco employees have built gardens, composting bins, nature trails and seating areas to create an outdoor learning environment. Bottom ash from our coal- and lignite-fired plants is used to build walking trails. Cleco E-Cool Schools:
Northwood High School in Boyce, Louisiana Students at Northwood partnered with employees at Cleco's Rodemacher Power Station to plant trees for beautification and energy efficiency and to build a walking trail made of bottom ash from the plant. Northwood's E-Cool School sponsors are Cleco and Rodemacher Power Station. It became an E-Cool School in February 2000. Mansfield Elementary and Middle School in Mansfield, Louisiana Cleco employees, teachers, faculty and students enhanced the school's nature trail with bottom ash from Cleco's Dolet Hills Power Station, built and planted gardens, built outdoor seating areas and compost bins and have planted about 300 trees for energy conservation and ground beautification. The second Friday of each month is designated as an E-Cool work day at Mansfield Elementary and Middle School. The school's E-Cool School sponsors are Cleco and Dolet Hills Power Station. It became an E-Cool School in September 2000.
Hayden R. Lawrence Middle School and Buckeye Elementary School in Deville, Louisiana In spring 2001, students of the Louisiana Tech Horticulture Society in Ruston volunteered their time and talent to design master landscaping plans for Hayden R. Lawrence Middle School. The landscaping plans include planting for beautification and energy efficiency, a butterfly and children's garden, a seating area around two memorial trees, drainage plans for problem areas, and a native Louisiana garden for the school's science classes. The school's E-Cool School sponsor is Cleco.
