UtiliTree Carbon Company
Cleco and 40 other U.S. utilities formed UtiliTree Carbon Company in 1995 to sponsor a portfolio of forestry projects that manage greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide.
These eight projects involve a diverse mix of rural tree planting, forest preservation, forest management and research efforts at both domestic sites in Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Oregon, and international sites in Belize and Malaysia. UtiliTree is investing more than $2.5 million to fund these projects.
In addition to the tree plantings that are restoring marginal farmland into forested acreage, UtiliTree members also hope to advance knowledge regarding forestry options for managing greenhouse gases, establish and implement low-cost forestry options, and promote environmental stewardship by the electric utility industry.
