Storm Safety

After a major storm, Cleco works around the clock to restore power.

During & After the Storm

  • Call 1-800-622-6537 to report a downed power line or dangerous situation with electricity
  • If the electricity is blinking on and off:
    - Turn off heating and air conditioning units
    - Unplug electronic appliances such as computers and televisions
  • Listen to local radio stations for current weather information.
  • If water is rising near your home or business, turn off electricity at the main breaker and evacuate.
  •  Always shut off all individual circuits before shutting off the main circuit breaker.
  • If you must leave your home during a storm, stay away from any downed line. Never touch an object that is touching a downed line.  Assume all downed lines are energized.
  • Stay away from downed and low-hanging lines.  Don't step in nearby water puddles or attempt to move an object that is touching a downed line.
  • Never attempt to repair the electrical system.
  • Remember downed lines could be hidden under fallen tree limbs and debris.
  • Do not connect portable generators to your home's electrical wiring.  Click here for more generator safety information.
  • Watch for crews working and avoid work areas.
  • Wait at least 15 minutes to turn on large appliances after the power has been restored.
  • Click here for food safety information.

When to call an electrician

  • Customers are responsible for damage behind the meter. This includes the:
    - Weather  Head
    - Meter Box
    - Riser or pole on top of or below your meter box
    - Attachment hardware
  • Homes or businesses that have been flooded need to be inspected before you turn on the breaker and may need a permit before we can restore power.
