New Roads, LA
Plant Type: Power
Fuel Source: Coal and Natural Gas
Rated Capacity: 1,708 megawatts

Big Cajun II, Louisiana’s first coal-fired station, is located on a 2,000-acre site near the Mississippi River in New Roads, LA.

Unit 1 is coal-fired unit and generates 580 megawatts.

Unit 2 was converted from coal to natural gas in 2015 and generates 540 megawatts. The conversion sharply reduced emissions of sulfur, mercury, nitrogen oxide and particulate matter. Other technologies installed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions include Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) technology, low nitrogen oxide burners and over fire air configurations.

Unit 3 is a coal-fired unit and generates 588 megawatts. It's jointly owned -- Louisiana Generation LLC owns 58 percent, and Entergy owns 42 percent of the unit.

The crew operating Big Cajun II is setting new standards for cleaner coal, and their strong commitment to safety has earned the plant recognition as a STAR Site in the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program.
