Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center - Negro Farmers of St. Landry Parish Program

Cleco is a proud sponsor of the Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center's Black History Month Farmers education program on February 17, 2022, starting at 1:00 p.m. at the Opelousas Museum and Interpretive Center. This Black History Month program honors the Negro Farmers of St. Landry Parish. Using multiple elements, the program will exhibit the farming process--how local farmers grew cotton, okra, sweet potatoes, rice, soybeans and other local crops. The event will be highly interactive and will stimulate the five senses. Historic and current photos as well as farming tools will be on display to illustrate the work and life of local farmers. On an hourly basis, farmers will share wisdom and stories of cultivating crops; presentations by academics will provide historical and social context. Interactive activities include a local farmers market on the premises with bushels of greens and root vegetables for sale. Free samples of prepared local vegetables give everyone the opportunity to taste the freshness provided by these cultivators.
