Alexandria Mayor Hall speaks at Cleco in observance of Black History Month

PINEVILLE, La. – Feb. 27, 2019 – Today, in observance of Black History Month, Alexandria Mayor Jeffrey Hall addressed Cleco employees, community leaders and students from Louisiana College at Cleco’s corporate headquarters in Pineville.

Mayor Hall, a former Cleco executive who made history by becoming the first black mayor of Alexandria, reflected on the contributions of historic African Americans, shared some of his own personal stories and spoke on the importance of open communication.

The Black History Month celebration was hosted by Cleco’s Diversity Advisory Council whose role is to help the company develop and maintain a work culture that promotes diversity and inclusion with a focus on tolerance and respect.

“When you hear the word diversity, race is usually the first thing you think of, but diversity is more than race,” said Kea Surgent, supervisor of asset accounting and member of the Diversity Advisory Council.  “We’re working to create an environment where no one feels excluded because of their race, gender, age, socioeconomic status, political affiliation, disability and so forth.

“Our goal is to celebrate all ethnic groups.  This was a moment to recognize contributions from African Americans, and it was great having someone with Mayor Hall’s unique experiences come and share with us,” said Surgent.

“It was an honor to speak to former co-workers, constituents and college students during Black History Month,” said Mayor Hall.  “Every opportunity to speak and listen is an opportunity to learn and grow.”

Mayor Hall began his career with Cleco in 1981 and retired after 32 years of service.
