Cleco, SLCC and Acadia Parish Chamber kick off Power Lineman Training Program

PINEVILLE, La. – Feb. 7, 2019 – Today, Cleco, in conjunction with South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) and the Acadia Parish Chamber of Commerce, announced the official opening of the SLCC Power Lineman Training Program housed at the community college’s Crowley campus. Cleco contributed $50,000 to SLCC in 2018 to help establish the program.

The four month program trains students to build, repair and maintain electrical systems for private and public utility companies. In addition, students receive hands-on safety training that includes best practices when framing and building overhead lines, operating a bucket truck and conducting extensive pole climbing.

“This is an opportunity for Cleco to help develop skilled, trained line workers in Louisiana and ultimately enhance our workforce,” said James Lass, Cleco general manager of distribution operations and emergency management. “Cleco is proud to support our industry while better serving our customers and communities.”

Upon graduation from the program, students will receive a National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) Certification, be qualified for employment and receive job placement assistance.

"We are thankful to Cleco and all of our energy partners who joined forces to bring the Power Lineman Program to Crowley," said Jermaine Ford, vice president of economic and workforce development at SLCC. "We know there's a need for line mechanics now and this program will help fill workforce gaps in this industry."
