Colder than normal weather forecasted

Cleco experts ready to help with energy conservation

PINEVILLE, La., Jan. 7, 2011 – As forecasters predict consecutive days of extreme cold for Louisiana, Cleco urges customers to protect their pipes, watch out for neighbors and outside pets and be mindful that heating systems could be operating longer to keep homes warm.

“We are entering what is historically the coldest time of the year for our area,” said Anthony Bunting, vice president of customer service and energy delivery. “As temperatures drop and remain low for several days straight, energy use will rise. Conserving now can help you manage the cost of your next electric bill.”

Since air and heating units are the largest users of electricity, Cleco suggests a winter thermostat setting of 68 degrees. If a homeowner expects to be away for a few hours, lowering the thermostat even more will provide additional savings. According to Cleco, a person can save approximately three percent on heating costs for every degree below 68 degrees.

Homeowners also can open drapes and blinds to allow the sun’s rays to warm a room, and close them at night to help keep out the cold. Stopping air leaks with caulk and weather stripping also provide an easy way to help controlan electric bill.

“There are many other practical, inexpensive ways to stay comfortable and keep your electric bill in check during this peak winter season,” said Bunting. “We have experts ready to help customers be more energy efficient.”
