Reduce Costs with Cleco

Farmers need reliable control of their irrigation systems, and electric irrigation pumps can deliver lower fuel costs with efficient power. Whether your pump is aging and is due for replacement, or you’re looking for a cost effective irrigation solution, converting a diesel pump's internal combustion engine to an electric motor can make a big impact for a farm. Cleco is available to help farmers and landowners, large and small, to electrify their infrastructure.

Electric irrigation pumps offer lower operating costs, reduced maintenance, and improved reliability compared to diesel systems. Electric pumps are ideal for irrigating sugarcane, rice, soybeans, and crawfish—crops with high water needs and predictable seasonal loads.

To help make your farm’s electrification journey easy and accessible, Cleco’s line extension policy exists to aid construction with a shared – and sometimes free – cost to upgrade utility infrastructure. Whether you currently own, or are considering transitioning to electric irrigation pumps, Cleco’s Agricultural Line Extension Program and Irrigation Rate Schedule offers financial support, aids construction and provides educational resources to help you save when you go electric. Line Extensions

Cleco is here to support your irrigation project. We’ll work with you to determine whether any out-of-pocket capital costs are required for the electrical infrastructure. If the project is expected to generate sufficient electricity use, Cleco may cover the full cost of the line extension. Each project is evaluated individually to determine how costs are shared between Cleco and the customer. See Cleco’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Electric Service for more details.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Cleco’s Agricultural Line Extension Program?

It’s a program that helps farmers convert diesel-powered irrigation systems to electric by providing access to expert account managers and assistance navigating the utility line extension process.
  • Who is eligible for this program?

Farmers or landowners who are evaluating electric pumps for irrigation and are located within Cleco service territory.
  • Will Cleco cover the full cost of the line extension?

It depends on your projected electricity usage. If your project is expected to meet certain usage thresholds, Cleco may cover the full cost. Each project is evaluated individually following [Cleco’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Electric Service]

  • Are there any out-of-pocket costs related to utility infrastructure for me?

Possibly. If your project doesn’t meet the usage threshold, you may be responsible for a portion of the infrastructure cost.
  • Are there any rebates or incentives for switching to electric pumps?

Cleco doesn’t provide a cash rebate for pump conversion, but Cleco offers financial support through its line extension program to electrify your pump. Cleco also offers irrigation service riders that may lower your bills.  Existing electric pump users may access incentives for upgrading to a more efficient electric motor.
  • How do I know which rate plan is best for my farm?

Cleco’s Account Managers will help you choose between the Crop Irrigation Service Rider and the Seasonal Electric Service Rider to find the most cost-effective option.
  • Will my electricity bills be lower than diesel fuel costs?

In many cases, yes. Electric pumps typically have lower operating costs and more stable pricing than diesel fuel.
  • What’s the process for getting started?

You’ll submit a Load Inventory and a New Service Request. Cleco will evaluate your site and usage, then begin construction if approved.
  • How long does it take to get electric service installed?

Timelines vary based on project complexity and location. Your Account Manager will provide a timeline after your site is evaluated.
  • Do I need to hire my own electrician or contractor?

You will need to coordinate with a licensed electrical contractor for any behind-the-meter infrastructure. Cleco typically will install any utility infrastructure up to the meter point.
  • Why should I switch from diesel to electric?

Electric pumps offer lower fuel costs, reduced maintenance, quieter operation, and no on-site emissions—making them better for your bottom line and the environment.
  • How long do electric pumps last?

Electric irrigation systems can last around 10 years or 150,000 hours with proper maintenance.
