Cleco encourages customers to prepare for hurricane season

May 29, 2025

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season begins on June 1 and runs through the end of November. Cleco is encouraging customers to prepare in case a hurricane or tropical storm impacts our 24-parish service territory.

Researchers with Colorado State University anticipate that the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season will have “above-normal activity.” It is predicted that there will be 17 named storms, nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes.

“Cleco prepares year-round for hurricane season,” said Clint Robichaux, director of distribution operations and reliability at Cleco Power. “We have supplies on-hand to repair damage to the system or equipment, and our crews are ready to restore power safely and efficiently.”

Cleco reliability crews are also preparing for hurricane season and other year-round unplanned power outages by doubling the removal of overgrown and hazardous vegetation in our rights-of-way. This six-year initiative addresses the leading cause of unplanned power outages.

Cleco is the only Louisiana utility to meet or exceed LPSC reliability standards for each of the last 26 years and kept customer lights on over 99% of the time in 2024.

Here are some steps customers can take to prepare for the 2025 hurricane season:

Create an emergency plan.

  • Develop a plan with family if you need to evacuate. Include a list of emergency contacts and make copies of important documents like insurance policies. Make sure your vehicle is fully fueled and is up to date on maintenance should you need to leave your home.

Create a storm kit.

  • A storm kit should include one gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food and a manual can opener, a battery-powered radio, first aid kit and important medications, among other items.

Prepare your generator and review generator safety information.

  • Portable generators, when used correctly, can provide backup power to your home or business in the event of a power outage. Always operate your generator according to manufacturer instructions and in an open, well-ventilated area.
