Cleco provides residents with energy-saving tips for cold weather

Jan 15, 2014

PINEVILLE, La. – Winter is bringing cold weather, increasing the demand for electricity. Cleco reminds customers of energy-saving tips to better manage their utility bills.

“Customers will save the most money by properly controlling their thermostat settings,” said Shirley Turner, customer experience manager for Cleco. “During winter months, customers should set their thermostats at 68 degrees for maximum efficiency. By dressing warmer while at home, customers can keep their thermostat on this efficient setting and save money on their bills.”

According to Cleco, customers can save approximately 3 percent on heating costs for every degree their thermostat is set below 68 degrees.

Customers also can save on electricity costs by having a programmable thermostat. Programmable thermostats are generally more convenient and accurate than the manual ones. They can be preset to a household’s daily schedule, making heating and cooling systems operate more efficiently.

“As always, be sure and change your system’s filter,” said Turner. “If a customer’s unit uses a permanent-type filter, refer to the manufacturer’s guide for proper use and cleaning. Customers should replace disposable filters monthly. A dirty filter will make equipment work harder and use more electricity.”

In the winter months, use the sun to help conserve energy. Open drapes and blinds on the sunny side of your home to allow the sun’s heat to warm a room and close them when the sun goes down to help keep out the cold. Stopping air leaks with caulk and weather stripping also will help customers manage their electric bills.

“There are many inexpensive ways for homeowners to keep costs down during the winter,” said Turner. “Being aware of these simple, low-cost energy-saving tips can help you save money on your electric bill.”
